"The Cilento area of Italy, south of Naples, seems mainly to be by passed by guide books and web sites, yet the coastline is blessed with beautiful blue flag sandy beaches and delightful resorts
CASTELLABATE is a medieval hill village, perched above the beach resort of Santa Maria, it is a delightful maze of tiny cobbled lanes and steps, every turn brings another view of ancient stone houses and balconies full of flowers. It has a charming small piazza with stunning views over the national park of Cilento, a perfect place for an icecream or drink before dinner in one of the excellent restaurants where you can have a table overlooking the sea with views out to Capri.
Castellabate has it’s own full orchestra, and in July there is a free music festival, It is magical to turn the corner and hear Rossini or Verdi in the piazza or sit in front of the church surrounded by Italian families with even the tiny children quiet as mice.
Castellabate is five or ten minutes by car, or local bus, from the lovely resort of Santa Maria which has golden sand beaches, clear seas, beach restaurants and cafes and a pedestrianised shopping street and a weekly market
We stayed at a wonderful hotel; Albergo Il Castello which was recommended by a friend who stumbled across it by chance. The hotel dates from the 17th century and has stunning views over the National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is just 200 yards from the piazza, and there is free parking nearby (the centre of the village is traffic free)
There is a reception area, and downstairs there is a bar and breakfast room, though breakfast is usually taken on the terrace, shaded by bougainvillaea and a giant fig trees.
There are 12 bedrooms, with private facilities, some with terraces or balconies, and all with antique or period furniture and white linen.
Albergo Il Castello is owned and run by Franca di Biasi, and this is it’s great advantage. We found Franca to be genuinely welcoming and she made us feel very much at home.
Breakfast was served on the terrace, clean white linen on the tables every day, freshly baked croissants, cake and bread, home made jam, juice, fresh fruit and usually the wonderful buffalo mozzarella delivered straight from the local farm.
Dinner is on request - and what a feast !!!, five or six courses of anti pasti. fresh anchovies, parma ham, mozzarella, salad, stuffed peppers, pasta, fish, meat, fruit and dessert. Sometimes it was a table for two, other times we would find ourselves invited to join a table for twelve when family or friends were invited to dinner – usually these evenings turned into musical evenings as Franca has a piano and some talented musicians as friends. If we chose to eat in one of the village restaurants we were always offered an aperitif before we went out, or a liquer when we returned.
We were able to visit Paestum, both in the day and in the evening, when opera was performed amongst the temples and we enjoyed a full day boat trip along the coast." | |
