"Those who love to fly Ryanair are accustomed to the illusory shift of large European cities. We fly to Paris (Beauvais) and easily trade another hour in a bus for the cheapness and ease of arrival in central Paris, pretty much ignoring the actual point of arrival.
This time, at Beauvais, we raised our heads and sniffed the air. We turned our back on that Paris bus, hired a car, and headed out into gentle, lush, high wide Picardy, and yes, roses WERE blooming.
We stayed just north of Beauvais in a beautiful gite in the grounds of a real French chateau. We were in the heart of France, surrounded by peace and tranquillity. We opted for half-board, which meant that every evening we relaxed, ate a wonderful French meal, laughed and chatted in the warm evening air with our hosts Francine and Xavier.
A room for one person is 44 euro. A room for two people is 52 euro, and a room for three people is 60 euro - you get the picture - round up a group of friends and your holiday can be unbelievably good value.! Evening meal is a very worthwhile 15 euro per person.
We did easy days out to ancient Compiegne, the world-renowned equestrian centre at Chantilly, and the thirteenth century cathedral at Amiens which, ninety years ago, was miraculously undamaged by the horrors of war.
