Also known as the ‘City of Discovery’, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city. It lies sandwiched between the River Tay and The Law, the hill that dominates approaching views of the city. The most dramatic views are gained from the two bridges (rail and road), which span the river from Fife. Dundee was traditionally known as the city of the three J’s – Jute, Jam and Journalism. Today there’s little jute processing, and also not much jam manufacture – although it’s still world-famous for Dundee Marmalade. Journalism still continues with D.C. Thomson, the producers of the Beano, Dandy, Sunday Post and Dundee Courier. It remains a vibrant town, with over a tenth of the population studying at one of the city’s universities or colleges. This brings the usual amounts of nightlife, as well as the acclaimed Repertory Theatre and Contemporary Arts Centre.
